Water Tower Town: Garner, NC

Garner in Johnston County, North Carolina truly is a water tower town. It's nickname is "JoCo" to the people here; where boots and camo match with everything, someone's heart is always being blessed, chicken is fried and people drink sweet tea like water. Trucks are like ferraris, the place to be is in the Cookout or Wal-Mart parking lot, and there is a bonfire to go to every weekend. Hunting is a country boys passion and dogs are like your kids. Garner couldnt have been able to be found even if a spotlight was shown on it until the American Idol, Scotty McCreery, had the spotlight shown on him. He is a born and raised resident and has definitely left his mark here.

In this small town there are shows called "showcases" which people try out for to get to sing and perform in them. Tryouts are always many months in advance and when Scotty tried out for the Country Music Showcase at JCC he had no clue where he would be in a few months; Hollywood. My dad, aspiring songwriter/singer, was also in the showcase and I remember him coming home from the tryouts and him talking all about a teenage boy who was an amazing singer. Of course this was before Scotty was on American Idol so we didnt know who he really was. When the showcase came around Scotty had gotten past the first round of American Idol but he was already under American Idol contract and wasnt allowed to perform; luckily, for my sisters and I, he was still there so my dad sang with him backstage and we got to take pictures with him.
Like I mentioned already about my dad being an aspiring songwriter/singer, he has been writing his own songs ever since I can remember. Recently he has recorded his own CD with some people from the Country Music Showcase that own a recording studio; they happen to be Scotty McCreery's band. He did such a good job on his CD that one of the ladies from the band asked him to sing and record a song that she was going to have Scotty listen to and hopefully like enough to record it as his own. The song was called "It's A God Thing", but since we havent heard it on the radio we are guessing it was turned down.
